The FHE Workshop is one of the pre-requisites to obtaining the Certified Tobacco Educator (CTE) credential, launched by the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care (CNRC). The CTE credential recognizes healthcare professionals who provide tobacco prevention and cessation services. This credential demonstrates to your clients, peers, and supervisors that you have the competencies to provide comprehensive, evidence-informed care in tobacco.

The CTE credential is based on two sets of competencies:
- Foundational Health Education Competencies
- Tobacco Education Competencies
Am I eligible to obtain the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care's Certified Tobacco Educator (CTE) Credential?
- Must have a degree or diploma in a recognized healthcare profession that includes counselling within its scope of practice.
- You must have completed CNRC-approved Tobacco Education Program (Note: the TEACH Core Course (An Interprofessional Comprehensive Course on Treating Tobacco Use Disorder) is a recognized equivalent of a comprehensive tobacco education program for healthcare professionals).
- You must have completed CNRC-approved Health Education Program (Note: The TEACH Foundational Health Educator Workshop is a recognized equivalent of a comprehensive health education program).
Additional notes:
- If you already have a CNRC credential (i.e. CRE, CAE, CCE) you are not required to take a foundational health education course, however it is still strongly recommended.
- In Ontario, healthcare practitioners are not required to have a CTE designation or a Certificate to provide tobacco cessation counselling. These programs do however ensure you have the recommended competencies to provide evidence-based cessation to your clients and/or patients.
