Laurie Zawertailo Our Leadership TeamPhD, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, CanadaSenior Scientistlaurie.zawertailo@camh.ca
Dr. Zawertailo’s research interests are in the areas of behavioural and neurobiological aspects of tobacco dependence and treatment, especially in individuals with comorbid depression or alcohol use disorders –sub-populations who have an especially high prevalence of tobacco dependence and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. Dr. Zawertailo utilizes a variety of techniques to approach this research question including neuroimaging, behavioural and cognitive tasks such as cue-induced craving, genetics, randomized clinical trials, and large population-based approaches to smoking cessation. Her goal is to understand the neurobiological processes involved in tobacco dependence in order to optimize treatment outcomes in these specific comorbid populations.

Sarwar Hussain Our Leadership TeamBSc in Toxicology, MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of TorontoDirector of Innovation, Operations & StrategySarwar.Hussain@camh.ca
Sarwar Hussain is the Director of Innovation, Operations & Strategy at the Nicotine Dependence Service at CAMH. He completed his undergraduate (BSc in Toxicology) and graduate (MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences) education at the University of Toronto. His graduate thesis work investigated behavioral mechanisms of smoking cessation pharmacotherapy. Currently he focuses on implementation and rapid scale-up of technology-enabled solutions to bring treatment to real and virtual patient spaces. This typically involves starting with what works, then innovating variations and new models with emerging technologies, informed by population behavior trends. His approach is to collaborate across disciplines, and engage in appropriate industry partnerships to achieve greater value for patients and increase return on investment for the healthcare system. This work stems from previous involvement in innovating and implementing large-scale treatment delivery initiatives for smoking cessation.
